Sydney Opera House presents
50 Years of Bossa Nova
Wednesday 10 September
Vinicius Cantuária, João Donato, Roberto Menescal, Wanda Sá and Marcos Valle
Rio de Janeiro and London have had their celebrations - now its Sydney’s turn!
The Sydney Opera House will welcome spring with the warm, tropical sounds of the greatest Brazilian bossa nova hits of the last fifty years, including “The Girl from Ipanema”, from three generations of artists for one night only at the Concert Hall on Wednesday 10 September.
“Bossa nova: a suave blend of samba and jazz that assuaged heartache even as it sang about it. A sound best sashayed to with caipirinha in hand, on Ipanema beach.” Evening Standard, UK
Since the 1960’s, when Brazilian musicians adopted elements of cool American jazz and smoothly blended them with the sexy, tropical rhythms of Afro-Brazilian samba, bossa nova has symbolised urbane sophistication and dashing romance. This sultry combination of samba and jazz first hit the airwaves in Brazil thanks to the now legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius Moraes and João Gilberto.
In this exclusive Australian concert, five of Brazil’s most prolific and popular bossa nova artists— João Donato, Marcos Valle, Roberto Menescal, Wanda Sá and Vinicius Cantuária—come together to showcase the evolution of bossa nova music with breathtaking songs that put Brazil on the world musical map and changed modern music forever.
These talented artists will be joined by a five-piece ensemble to pay tribute to the timeless bossa classics– The Girl from Ipanema, Aguas de Marco, Influencia do Jazz, and Chega de Saudade—as well as playing their own and each other’s music in a concert devised exclusively for Sydney Opera House, and The Esplanade, Singapore. Discover just how far this genre has travelled in this triumphant, unforgettable night of all things bossa.
“The standing ovation is for what this music has given Brazil, and the world.” The Independent, UK
