THE STUDIO AT SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE PRESENTS CABARET DECADANSE BY SOMA INTERNATIONAL
Presented in association with Spiegeltent International
A New Mardi Gras Festival event
The ultimate puppet show for adults; sensual, surprising and hilarious
Sunday Independent, Dublin
Fresh from appearing with La Clique at The Famous Spiegeltent, Canada’s acclaimed adults-only puppet-theatre group, SOMA, will bring this ancient artform to The Studio at Sydney Opera House for 10 shows only.
Camp, cool and quirky, Cabaret Décadanse uses the universal language of music and movement to create a steamy, after-dark nightclub world in which sensuality and sexuality have never rhymed so well with vulgarity.
Brimming with naughtiness, three maestro puppeteer-dancers create a weightless ballet against a haunting musical backdrop. With few props and simple lighting, they skilfully manipulate the cast of tawdry characters into a magical piece of mime, masque and puppetry.
Serge Deslauriers, Annemarie Panneton and Enock Turcotte use masks, marionettes and even the humble sock, sashaying seamlessly from puppet to puppet. Ingeniously brought to life, the huge personalities of the puppets raise the question: just who is manipulating who?
SOMA’s eclectic line-up of cabaret divas include Conrad the French transvestite, Kiko the Latin lover, and the criminally seductive Chica. With much rigor and sweet madness they explode onto the stage in a series of humorous vignettes.
Instantly captivating and charming audiences across the globe, Cabaret Décadanse is a treat for any music lover. The soundtrack samples pop, blues, jazz and Broadway numbers from famous hits such as Gershwin’s Summertime to Fever, Hard Day’s Night and Pussy Tourette’s I Think He’s Gay.
SOMA International was founded by Serge Deslauriers, Raynald Michaud and Énock Turcotte in 1999. From the streets to stages all around the world, SOMA has performed in Canada, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore Scotland, Spain and Switzerland.
Cabaret Décadanse is glamorous and bawdy fun, an escape from the mundane.
Think of Priscilla Queen of the Desert meets Moulin Rouge done with puppets and written by Pedro Almodovar, and you're half-way there. Evening News, Edinburgh
