SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE IN ASSOCIATION WITH ARTS PROJECTS AUSTRALIA PRESENTS CESARIA EVORA
One of the cleanest, most unadorned voices on Earth. The Independent (UK)
She's a Grammy award-winning artist who has sold nearly 5 million records and now Cesária Evora, The Barefoot Diva steps on to Sydney Opera House’s Concert Hall stage for one show only!
A true music icon and one of the original world music superstars, Cesária Evora famously performs barefoot in recognition of the fortuneless women and children from her island home. On stage, Cesária is pure soul. Her self-contained grandeur and unmistakable sound give her an almost immortal presence and poise that’s faultless.
With her lush harmonies, accompanied by a line-up of percussion, piano and strings, the bittersweet beauty of Cesária’s voice channels the soul of her people, of love and longing, of departure and nostalgia. Singing in Creole Portuguese, her melancholic rendering of morna – a style unique to the archipelago – fuses Latin jazz and Afro beats with traces of Portuguese fado and Brazilian modinha (ballads).
Variously compared to Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday and Anjelique Kidjo, in her early life Cesária literally sang for her supper at bars in her native Cape Verde, a former slave port off the coast of Senegal. Now at almost 70, her gutsy, evocative songs have reached the world and she is enjoying a belated international performing career, with recent performances in some of the world’s most prestigious venues and festivals, including Carnegie Hall, Grand Rex Paris, Royal Festival Hall, Barbican Centre and London International Jazz Festival.
It's difficult to find highlights in a Cesária Evora live show, because the bar is set so high to begin with, and never dipped below (worldmusic.about.com)
She concludes a faultless 20-song show and walks from the stage to a deserved standing ovation. The Independent (UK)
