2008 Event Media Release - Daniel Bernard Roumain + DJ Scientific

Issued Monday, January 14, 2008

The Studio at Sydney Opera House presents
Daniel Bernard Roumain + DJ Scientific: etudes4violin&electronix

4 & 5 March
The Studio

Presented by arrangement with the Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts

With special guest Wynne Bennett on keyboards

[DBR] combines a rock star persona with a musical approach that does for amplified violin what Jimi Hendrix did for electric guitar The Australian

Strings and scratches mix it up as violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) goes head-to-head with long-time collaborator and turntablist DJ Scientific (a.k.a Elan Vytal) and keyboardist Wynne Bennett, in a concert experience that will turn your musical world upside-down.
Known for fusing his classical music roots with a myriad of soundscapes, Haitian-American artist DBR has carved a reputation for himself as a passionately innovative composer, performer, violinist, and band leader.

DBR’s dramatic soul-inspiring pieces range from orchestral scores and energetic chamber works to rock songs and electronica. His exploration of musical rhythms and classically-driven sounds is peppered by his own cultural references and vibrant musical imagination.

This concert features selected solo and duet works from DBR’s recent album, etudes4violin&electronix, and from the critically acclaimed Sonata for Violin and Turntables, conceived by DBR and co-written with contemporary music remixer extraordinatire, DJ Scientific.

A musical exploration between contrasting cultures and instruments of classical and pop music genres, the program speaks to the history and traditions of both. The violin, the turntables and the laptop sing, battle and rhyme together, honouring a full spectrum of musical inventions.

Some people say I’m the Anti-Christ of classical music, says Roumain. I am redefining, reappropriating and remixing what it means to be a composer.

DBR has collaborated with artists as diverse as Philip Glass, DJ Spooky and Ryuichi Sakamoto. His revolutionary blend of classical and hip hop jumps from concert hall to dance club and back again with joyous abandon. See and hear the future, now!
