Issued Monday 11 August, 2008

Legends of Australian rock and jazz collide
Paul Kelly and Paul Grabowsky’s show Meet Me in the Middle of the Air comes to Sydney

This October, jazz maestro Paul Grabowsky and Australian songwriter Paul Kelly
put God himself on stage for a special concert event Meet Me in the Middle of the
shared with pals, the Australian Art Orchestra, Vika & Linda Bull and Tina
Harrod with her vocal ensemble. For one night only, Friday 17 October, the Sydney
Opera House concert hall becomes a temple of song featuring some of Kelly’s most
loved songs in special arrangements that transform them from rock hymns of the
everyday man into sweeping rhapsodies, soaring ragtime jazz and even sassy
Cuban salsa. The result is an unforgettable night of beautiful music of immense
power, a testament to Paul Kelly’s songbook as one of the richest in contemporary
Australian music.

Spanning Kelly’s catalogue from the late 80s to now, including Be Careful What
You Pray For, God’s Hotel
(lyrics by Nick Cave), and the specially written, Meet Me
in the Middle of the Air
, the songs featured in the concert are performed in new
arrangements by Paul Grabowsky. Originally commissioned by the Adelaide
Cabaret Festival, where it met with sell-out crowds, Meet Me in the Middle of the Air
comes to Sydney for the first time exclusively at Sydney Opera House.
Led by Grabowsky himself and performed by Australia’s pre-eminent contemporary
music ensemble, the 10-member Australian Art Orchestra, the concert features
Paul Kelly, the soulful harmonies of the much-loved Vika and Linda Bull and
sublime jazz singer Tina Harrod's own vocal ensemble.

‘…the overriding impression was the brilliance of Grabowsky’s soul-fired
arrangement… with so much talent assembled on stage…’
