Sydney Opera House presents
Drag! Camp as Christmas
4 – 6 December, The Studio
Tickets on-sale Tuesday, October 13
"This is Sydney entertainment at it's best. Wild, wicked, funny and out of control. The way we like it!! Who says they don't make girls the way they used to." - Jimmy Barnes
Sydney’s superstars of drag will return to Sydney Opera House for three glittering performances in Drag! Camp as Christmas.
Following the phenomenal sell-out success of Camp as a Row of Spiegeltents and Drag!, Sydney’s best are back for another season of unadulterated gorgeousness and in-your-face fabulousness. Expect the best Drag! favourites and lots of new outings…including a XXX-Mas extravaganza!
Produced by DIVA Award-winning Amelia Airhead, the show is a sure fire hit for the Christmas party season given the overwhelming response to the previous two seasons. Tickets will sell fast.
“The success of Drag! at Sydney Opera House has been a real boost for our showgirls and proves that drag has long, lean legs that sashay way beyond Oxford Street – good quality drag can be commercially viable,” Amelia said.
“We’ve shown that drag doesn’t have to be hidden away in nightclubs in the wee small hours. We’ve had all ages, gay, straight and lots of drag virgins, who hopefully learned that it isn’t all that scary, just bloody good fun!”
A sleeper hit for Sydney Opera House, the show squeezes decades of colour and movement from some of Sydney's current shows, plus famous performances from decadent decades past, in the intimate surrounds of The Studio.
Hosted by the award-winning effervescent Mitzi Macintosh, Drag! Camp as Christmas will feature a brand new commission celebrating all things festive, exclusive to Sydney Opera House.
“Tinsel, fairies, pretty wrapped buff boys, shiny balls – Christmas really was made for drag queens as most of our costumes are made from half-price decorations,” Mitzi said. “Throw in a few showgirls and you get a seasonal celebration you’ll never forget, no matter how hard you try.”
Some of the performers joining Amelia and Mitzi on stage include Minnie Cooper, Joyce Maynge, Dallas Dellaforce, Monique Kelly, Trudi Valentine, Portia Turbo, Charisma Belle, Carmen Geddit and the hottest eye-candy male dancers in town.
Plus, keep an eye out for the special nightly guests including Pollie Petrie, Trevor Ashley and the legendary drag diva Miss Maude Boate, who will return to Sydney especially for this season.
Every queen likes a makeover so renowned costume designer Matthew Aberline has also joined the show to create some amazing cutting-edge couture outfits for these festive season follies.
Aberline, principal costume designer at New Mardi Gras for five years, was featured in Harpers Bazaar’s new hardback on Australian style and recently worked with stylist-designer Jason Alper to create the outrageous looks for Sacha Baron Cohen and entourage for Sydney’s Brüno premiere.
And the fun doesn’t stop when the fat lady mimes; our hand-picked Drag! DJs will keep the party going with plenty of time for drinking, dancing and perhaps a little romancing under the mistletoe.
