“.....hilarious yet touching in the human fragility it conveys.” The Guardian
Sydney Opera House presents the UK theatre company, Hoipolloi with it’s brilliantly comic production, Floating, 2 – 14 March, Playhouse.
Created and performed by Shôn Dale-Jones’s alter-ego,Hugh Hughes and his collaborative partner, Sioned Rowlands, Floating was a hit at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2006, winning the coveted Total Theatre Prize. It returned to Edinburgh in 2007 before being presented at London’s Barbican, Off Broadway and across the United Kingdom.
Reminding us of the notorious 1982 April Fool's Day joke, about the Isle of Anglesey being torn from the mainland of Wales due to an earthquake, Hughes and Rowlands, in barely controlled lunacy, reconstruct the island’s whistle stop tour of the globe, across the Atlantic, up to the Artic and beyond.
Trapped on board the island, Hughes and Rowlands, use low level multi-media (think overhead projectors and slides) music and good old fashioned story-telling to remind us about connecting with the place you were raised, the people you grew up with and, the audience in the theatre
“Warmly appealing and sprinkled with surreal surprises and a brisk charm.” The Times, 4 stars
Carefully scripted, but involving the audience at every opportunity, the source of the play is it’s creator’s Welsh identity. Says Hughes, "a lot of Floating is about the places we come from, they always have a hand in shaping who we are and I suppose I’m beginning to get a grip with what identity is.”
“A small but beautifully formed gem.” Evening Standard, 4 stars
Founded in 1994 by joint Artistic Directors Shôn Dale-Jones and Stefanie Müller, Hoipolloi has become one of the foremost touring theatre company's in Britain. Committed to making new work for the past 11 years, touring over 13 new shows nationally and internationally, Hoipolloi creates visually powerful work that celebrates the imagination unbound by the confines of reality.
Shôn Dale-Jones was born in Llangevny on Anglesey. While studying film and drama at the University of East Anglia, he honed his writing and performing skills as a stand-up comedian and still has something of the stand-up about him. As Dale-Jones explains, "through laughter you become more open to possibilities". He spent two years at the highly-regarded Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School in Paris before founding Hoipolloi. Now, as well as being artistic director, he writes, directs and performs. His success can be judged from the number of shows and the numerous countries that they have toured, primarily in Europe and America.
Hoipolloi are recording two shows as they tour around the globe. Once the film is complete, the company will take it around Wales to demonstrate how a local boy can make good and conquer the world.
Floating is presented in Australia with the support of the British Council and presented in association Melbourne Arts House.
