Sydney Opera House Talks presents in association with Sydney Architecture Festival
GLENN MURCUTT AO & DAVID MALOUF
in conversation with Julianne Schultz
5 October, The Studio
Architecture provides the stage for us to play out life’s stories, real or imagined.
The Sydney Architecture Festival is a one-day program of talks, tours, exhibitions and children’s activities, focused around Customs House, Circular Quay and the world heritage masterpiece Sydney Opera House on Monday, October 5.
Providing thought-provoking new perspectives about Sydney, event organisers hope to communicate the importance of good design in achieving a sustainable, healthy and culturally rich built environment.
The inaugural festival in 2007 attracted 4,500 people with crowds growing by a third last year – the keynote address by former Prime Minister Paul Keating at Sydney Opera House sold out. The headline talk of the 2009 line-up will take place at the Sydney Opera House Studio.
Celebrated Australians, Pritzker prize-winning architect Glenn Murcutt AO and novelist David Malouf - in conversation with Julianne Schultz – will explore how the world we have literally built around us shapes our lives, for better or worse.
Covering their views on the built environment and the importance of good architecture to humanity, this wide-ranging conversation will look at Murcutt’s life and work as well as canvas some of Malouf’s thoughts has expressed in his writing, including 12 Edmonstone Street; his ABC Boyer Lectures, his 2000 National Trust Heritage Lecture, and most importantly his foreword to Glenn Murcutt, Architect.
Julianne Schultz is an author, editor of Griffith REVIEW and a professor in the Centre for Public Culture and Ideas at Griffith University. A newly appointed ABC Board Member, she was the co-chair of the Creative Stream at the 2020 Summit.
The Sydney Architecture Festival is a joint venture between the Australian Architecture Association, Australian Institute of Architects (NSW Chapter) and the NSW Architects Registration Board.
