The Little Mermaid
2 & 3 May, Concert Hall
Concert version of Andersen’s classic tale narrated by Deborah Mailman
“I sat enthralled and listened enraptured…Silver was divine…Garburg held show like a master showman.” The Independent
Play School star and much-loved Australian actress Deborah Mailman will join Israel’s extraordinary Silver-Garburg Piano Duo and a chamber orchestra to narrate a superb concert production of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid.
Andersen’s compelling tale will be vividly brought to life through a spectacular orchestral score by Lior Navok set in the stunning surrounds of the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall for seven shows only.
With the favourite fairytale elements of suspense, magic, love and friendship, The Little Mermaid is an endearing story about unrequited love. A young mermaid’s love for a prince compels her to become human, only to find the prince loves someone else.
More than just telling the story, the narration skilfully weaves the magic of the words into the poetry of the music. The musical forms beautifully evoke the emotions and imagery of the story, taking the children through longing, joy, danger, disappointment and resolution.
At the same time, the music conjures the images and moods of the sea both on the surface and underneath. Children can watch the musicians play, see the conductor at work, and notice the complex interactions between the different players and the storyteller.
With colourful lighting, this musically and visually rich experience will stimulate imaginations and provoke discussions about how music and words can inspire vivid and memorable imaginative images.
Israel’s Sivan Silver and Gil Garburg founded their piano duo in 1997 quickly gaining enthusiastic acclaim from music audiences and critics alike.
Praised for their "lyric sensitivity, extraordinary inner perception and overwhelming technical mastering", the duo’s international career has taken them to more than 40 countries across five continents.
Silver and Garburg have performed at such prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Berlin Philharmonie, Vienna Musikverein and Rome's New Auditorium, to name a few.
Highly respected, they have played alongside some of the world’s best orchestras including the Israel Philharmonic, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, Melbourne Symphony, Tchaikovsky Symphony, Berlin Symphony, Jerusalem Symphony, Bucharest Philharmonic, Taipei Philharmonic, Chile Philharmonic and Mexico State Symphony.
“fantastic, seamless interchanges between the two pianos…brilliant emotional and dynamic contrast and extraordinary energy.” The Canberra Times
