“Bird could do for independent American music what Tarantino did for American cinema.” The Independent

Missed out on a ticket to the Falls Festival? If so, here is your last chance to catch the superb US singer-songwriter Andrew Bird in his only Sydney show for 2010.

Performing songs from his back catalogue and hailed 2009 release Noble Beast, Bird will make his Sydney Opera House debut with full band in the Concert Hall on Sunday, January 3.

Since his sold out shows at the 2008 Sydney Festival, Bird has become an unlikely rock star, taking the world by storm with his striking, intricate indie-folk music.

Bird is a maestro of multi-layered pop – his songs steeped in the folk traditions with sweepings of jazz, swing and blues.

As evidenced on Noble Beast, Bird’s music swings eclectically between lofty grandeur and sweet intimacy, telling tales of twisted insight and nimble humour.

Don’t expect this concert to be a straight sampling of his fifth solo album as it is live where he is the most exciting and adventurous.
Recreating new arrangements live on stage, Bird can generate the wealth of sound normally produced by an orchestra.

He uses a sampling pedal to orchestrate live layers of fiddle, electric guitar, glockenspiel and vocals with frequently whistled melodies.

His recent gig at New York’s prestigious Radio City Music Hall sold out and more than 15,000 stormed Chicago’s Millennium Park to hear Bird play in front of his hometown crowd.

Critics claim he combines the best parts of Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright and Thom Yorke but it is his own distinctive style that fans have fallen in love with.

Bird picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up a classical repertoire completely by ear.

So, when it came time for a restless teenager to make the jump to Hungarian gypsy music, early jazz and country blues it wasn’t such a giant leap.
“Bird is a true musical one-off. You really ought to see him. 5 out of 5.” The Guardian
