Sydney audiences to enjoy some ‘hanky panky’ with Ursula Martinez in her solo Opera House debut
Created and Performed by Ursula Martinez
Directed by Mark Whitelaw
WARNING: MAY CONTAIN REALLY BORING NUDITY
“A cunning exploration of identity, intimacy and fantasy…sharp, raw, offbeat and witty…a clever show that derives comedy from the absurd” Four-and-a-half stars, The Age
Ursula Martinez became unexpectedly globally famous when her satirical La Clique striptease act Hanky Panky was illegally filmed and posted on YouTube.
Since then, Martinez has written some true stories and many strangers have sent her unbelievable emails.
After a sold-out season at Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre and fresh from the Feast Festival in Adelaide, Ursula brings her first truly solo creation to the Sydney Opera House and invites audiences on a hilarious journey to meet the ordinary and extraordinary characters in her life – and her inbox.
My Stories, Your Emails is an hysterical and uncompromising portrait of herself – and an investigation into identity, relationships, confession, obsession, miscommunication, the internet, fame, sex, loneliness…and political incorrectness.
An astute observer of the world around her, Ursula combines spoken word, live art, character comedy and stand up to create an utterly riveting and compelling genre-busting performance that has been highly recommended to broad-minded adults the world over.
“…the wit and warmth of her personality, her mixture of the decorous and the outrageous, and her splendid way with an anecdote all mark her out as a big star in the making,” Charles Spencer wrote in The Daily Telegraph (UK). “I can’t wait to see what this humane, observant and highly original writer-performer does next.”
From her first jaw-locking performance at Manchester’s Queer Up North 10 years ago, Ursula has gone on to perform regularly at the Barbican and, closer to home, to star in the outrageously brilliant nouvelle cabaret show La Clique and as legendary guest for The Burlesque Hour.
An associate artist with the Duckie Collective, she is also one of the creators of the Olivier Award-winning show C’est Barbican! as well as the autobiographical theatre shows Me Me Me! and Office Party.
Directed by Mark Whitelaw (founder of The Glee Club Performance Company), My Stories, Your Emails was originally commissioned by barbicanbite10 and QueerUpNorth International Festival.
