Sydney Opera House presents
Concert Hall, January 2 & 3
Seattle’s Fleet Foxes will play Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on January 2 and 3 in what will surely be an early contender for gig of the year.
Often compared to seminal '60s artists Bob Dylan, Neil Young, the Zombies and the Beach Boys, their sound and unique song craft set them apart. With many interludes for voices alone, their songs are wilful, changeable, and rarely content with verse-chorus-bridge structures; they can be mini-suites and quasi-psychedelic excursions.
Fleet Foxes are Robin Pecknold (vocals, guitar), Skyler Skjelset (guitar), Christian Wargo (bass, guitar, vocals), Casey Wescott (keyboards, vocals), Morgan Henderson (multiple instruments) and J. Tillman (drums, vocals).
The band released their debut full-length self-titled album in 2008. It was given 4 stars by Rolling Stone, and compared to the likes of The Beach Boys, Animal Collective, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. In June the same year, they received 9 out of 10 in a review by Pitchfork for their self-titled LP, and in December, the Sun Giant EP and their self titled LP together shared the title of Pitchfork’s #1 album(s) of 2008.
Fleet Foxes’ second full-length album, Helplessness Blues (Sub Pop/Inertia) was released in 2011 to overwhelming critical acclaim and propelled them to No. 6 in the Australian national charts (No. 2 in the UK and No. 4 in the US) confirming their status as a bona fide crossover success story.
