Sydney Opera House presents
with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Andrew Davis
"Deborah Voigt, whose combination of golden-toned, full-bodied singing and luminous beauty has made her the opera world’s Isolde of choice."
“This is a soprano of penetrating power and clarity.”
New York Times
The world’s pre-eminent dramatic soprano Deborah Voigt makes her Australian debut in June, singing the music which has taken her to the highest levels of opera stardom.
Ms Voigt will perform twice in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Sir Andrew Davis, Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Conductor Laureate of the BBC Symphony.
Now renowned for her performances in the operas of Wagner and Richard Strauss, Ms Voigt was a late starter - only turning to classical music in her twenties. With a background in choral singing, Ms Voigt entered vocal competitions with the hope to win money to help pay her AMEX bills after college. Blessed with great musicality and a rare vocal gift, she found herself winning and a stellar career was born.
Her career goes from strength-to-strength. Ahead of her Australian tour, Ms Voigt will take centre stage at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, performing in the role of Brünnhilde in three complete Ring cycles – a great feat of vocal and physical athleticism.
Ms Voigt became international front-page news in 2003 after being famously ‘removed’ by the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden from a role she’d been booked to sing because she was too large to fit into one of the costumes, a ‘little black dress’. The poise and grace with which she handled the situation affirmed the respect she has earned within the opera community and also found her a place in the hearts of the general public.
She is a down-to-earth 21st century diva, known for her charisma and charm not only on the stage, but also in media interviews and social media circles. Good Morning America have called her “one of the greatest singers of our time” and NRP radio network in the US recently declared her one of the “Five Musicians Who Are Fun to Follow on Twitter”.
