Sydney Opera House presents
Concert Hall 9 February
At just 21, British folk musician, Laura Marling can quite rightfully lay claim to being one of the most gifted singer/songwriter’s of her generation. With a reputation for pin-drop live performances, the Concert Hall will make the perfect setting for Laura and band to debut songs from her most ambitious album yet, 2011's critically acclaimed A Creature I Don't Know.
If you were lucky enough to catch her sell-out Sydney performances last year, you will agree, Marling is a charismatic performer. Her rich, sophisticated voice never falters as she speaks directly to her audience through song, slicing the intensity every now and then with a dose of witty banter.
With an impressive debut at No. 12 on the Australian charts, A Creature I Don't Know is Marling’s third album. Musically bolder and lyrically more astute, it reveals her to be a remarkable storyteller.
‘Laura Marling’s showing some surprising new colours on her third album. Malevolently dark in places, playfully jazzy in others, it’s not the Marling you think you know.’ NME
'Laura Marling has rightly earned a reputation as the real deal, a wise-beyond-her-21-years traditionalist, evoking the legendary Brit-folk voices of Shirley Collins, Sandy Denny, and Linda Thompson.' Spin
Her debut, 2008's Alas I Cannot Swim, revealed a writer markedly different to her peers — keener, more steady of gaze, with the Guardian newspaper calling it ‘a classic to stand the test of time’. I Speak Because I Can, arrived just two years later, but took a great stride forward in maturity, addressing themes of mortality, womanhood, and responsibility. It would earn her not only critical acclaim and a devoted fan base, but also a second Mercury Prize nomination and a Brit Award for Best Female Solo Artist.
