Sydney Opera House presents
Concert Hall, Sunday 16 September
In a special one-off concert, Grammy award-winning neo-soul singer, Macy Gray will play the Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House on Sunday 16 September. Finally returning to Australia after over ten years, Macy will perform hits from her six studio albums that shook the world and made her a household name.
With over 25 million records sold worldwide and multiple awards Macy Gray has body of work that leaps genre barriers from experimental soul to alternative rock and retro-disco to hip-hop. Like fellow neo-soul sister pioneers, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and rising star Janelle Monae, Macy’s music has commanded a presence in the mainstream while remaining true to her soul and R&B roots.
Macy’s smash hit, I Try, from her multi-platinum debut, On How Life Is, is one of the most recognisable songs of the millennium. Her unmistakable raspy voice is “somewhere between Billie Holiday's wounded cry and Bob Dylan's feisty rasp” (Rolling Stone).
Her latest release, Covered, is a stunning album of remakes produced by Hal Willner (Lou Reed, Marianne Faithfull, Laurie Anderson). Largely drawn from from indie rock hits over the last decade, the album contains biting, dark signature tracks which Gray subversively overhauls into something wholly her own, such as Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up” or Radiohead’s “Creep”.
