2012 Event Media Release - Michael Pollan

Media Release
Tuesday April 3, 2012

SYDNEY EVENT: Sydney Opera House, Concert Hall, Tuesday 10 July, 2012
MELBOURNE EVENT: Melbourne Town Hall, Sunday 8 July, 2012

“Looking at the world from other species’ points of view is a cure for the disease of human self-importance.” Michael Pollan

American bestselling author and journalist Michael Pollan will return to Australia this July. For the past 25 years, Pollan has been opening our eyes to food with books like Food Rules, In Defense of Food and The Omnivore’s Dilemma.

Few writers approach their subjects with the rigour, passion and perspective that's typical of Michael Pollan. Whereas most humans think we are Darwin's most accomplished species, Pollan convincingly argues that plants — even our own front lawns — have evolved to use us as much as we use them.

In 2010 Pollan was named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People and is a favourite among foodie and environmental crowds alike. When it comes to food, ethics and health, Pollan’s message is that we're not going to get it right until we start thinking about where our food comes from.

Exploring the ethical bonds that connect our bodies, farms and food, in these events Pollan will be in conversation telling complex stories in an engaging voice and reveal what our food system has become and just how badly we need to fix it.

The author and New York Times Magazine contributor is, as Newsweek asserts, “an uncommonly graceful explainer of natural science,” for his investigative stories about food, agriculture, and the environment. His book, The Omnivore's Dilemma, was named one of the top five nonfiction titles of 2006.

As the Knight Professor of Science and Environmental Journalism at UC Berkeley, Pollan is cultivating the next generation of green reporters.
