JORDAN VERZAR, GRAPHIC CO-CURATOR
Sydney Opera House today announced that the wildly imaginative and whimsical world of Seussville will be brought to life in the Western Foyers with a special free retrospective exhibition of Dr. Seuss artworks, exclusively as part of GRAPHIC Festival from November 2-11.
Chronicling seven decades of work from the American artist Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, The Art of Dr. Seuss Retrospective and International Touring Exhibition will house a groundbreaking collection of 70 years of Seuss’ art history. This includes his illustration Art, Unorthodox Taxidermy and his not to be missed Secret Art Series. This exciting exhibition of limited editions mixed in with museum panels or original memorabilia is an eye-opening experience for the general public. The exhibition will feature over 80 pieces of Dr. Seuss artworks, including works from iconic titles Cat In The Hat, The Grinch, Green Eggs and Ham, The Lorax and many more.
This rare glimpse into the world of illustrator, author, poet and cartoonist Theodor Seuss Geisel will showcase the surrealist visual imagery for which he became famed and saw him create 44 children’s books, over 400 World War II political cartoons, hundreds of advertisements and the creation of much-loved animals and other-worldly characters.
Jordan Verzar GRAPHIC co-curator said, "It's an honour to be able to announce this event as part of the program for Graphic 2012. Dr. Seuss has inspired and is loved by generations of people. No other artist can provide such a wonderful blend of wistful nostalgia and surrealism to an adult and wacky colourful fun to their kids. If you ever enjoyed his books, I am sure you will now enjoy the chance to discover the life of this esteemed artist; his personal artwork, his history and his wonderful characters."
Presented in association with Trevor Victor Harvey Gallery, the works in this exhibition have been curated from public and private collections, including the Estate of Dr. Seuss.
Trevor Victor Harvey from Trevor Victor Harvey Gallery said: “This Dr. Seuss retrospective and international touring exhibition was last shown on this scale, at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry as a ticketed event. I am very proud to have the Estate’s museum panels on loan in their entirety from Audrey Geisel especially for this event. I’m also proud to bring this exhibition free to the public, in such an iconic landscape in association with the wonderful Graphic festival."
Over 25 performers from Australian music collective Elefant Traks will also be paying musical tribute to the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss at the exclusive GRAPHIC commission Dr. Seuss Meets Elefant Traks, on Sunday 11 November. Watch a preview clip here.
