After 32 years of performance and recording, Harry Christophers and his celebrated choir and orchestra, The Sixteen are recognised as one of the world’s greatest ensembles. For their first Sydney Opera House performance in 20+ years, on Monday 27 February 2012, they will sing an all Handel program, including his best-loved choral work, his uplifting Dixit Dominus, within the magnificent surrounds of the Concert Hall. This same program was presented at the 2011 Edinburgh International Festival to universal acclaim.
The Sixteen is a London-based professional ensemble, comprising choir and period-instrument ensemble. Its total commitment to the music it performs is its greatest distinction, from the Renaissance and the Baroque to early British polyphony and contemporary work. The choir’s vocal passion and joyful sound are often commented upon by critics around the world. This special and distinctive reputation is drawn from the passion of conductor and founder Harry Christophers with The Sixteen now ranked as one of the world’s top five choirs by Gramophone Magazine.
Harry Christophers is known internationally as founder and conductor of The Sixteen as well as a regular guest conductor for many major symphony orchestras and opera companies. He has directed The Sixteen choir and orchestra throughout Europe, America and the Far East gaining a distinguished reputation for his work in Renaissance, Baroque and twentieth century music. He has made a significant contribution to the recording catalogue (already comprising some ninety titles) for which The Sixteen have won numerous awards including a Grand Prix du Disque for Handel’s Messiah, the coveted Gramophone Award for Early Music and most recently, a prestigious Classical Brit Award for the disc entitled Renaissance.
