MEDIA RELEASE

Sydney Opera House presents
Erykah Badu
19 February 2012
Sydney Opera House, Concert Hall

In her first ever headline Australian tour, get set to be blown away by the extra-ordinary Queen of Neo-Soul, Grammy Award winning artist, Erykah Badu with 10-piece band.

With an incredible career spanning R&B, hip hop and jazz, Badu is barely comparable, in the best possible way. Forging her own path in soul music - and almost single-handedly directing the genre - since her ’97 debut Baduizm sold over 3 million copies; Badu is renowned for live shows that incite rapturous engagement and lifelong allegiance.

Bursting through hits like On & On, Love Of My Life, Apple Tree, Tyrone, Bag Lady, Window Seat and more, her passionate, politicised, polished performances are utterly compelling, leaving audiences transfixed. Not only can she freestyle with the best of the best rapper, but she will melt your heart with her languid vocal styling often compared to the likes of Billie Holiday and Aretha Franklin.

Her latest release New Amerykah Part II (Return Of The Ankh) further pushed the boundaries of contemporary soul music, enlisting the work of previous collaborators James Poyser and Ahmir  Thompson (The Roots, Al Green) as well as cutting edge producers like Madlib, Sa Ra Creative Partners, Karriem Riggins (Diana Krall) and the late J Dilla.

Book now! Do not miss the captivating Erykah Badu in concert this summer.

‘Badu had control of her band with a tightness of which I can only compare to the legendary James Brown. …Leaving us all salivating for more.’ musicfeeds.com.au

‘With a voice equal parts Chaka Kahn, Aretha Franklin and Beyonce, Badu swooned, screamed, hollered and serenaded her audience …utterly compelling.’ thevine.com.au

‘Superiorly seductive R&B which doesn't insult your intelligence while still turning your head’ The Independent, UK
‘She's barely comparable, in the best possible way.’ – The Vine

‘When she glides to the microphone and sings her first notes, the mood magically changes to euphoria. Badu's voice is worth the wait, and she knows it’ – Guardian
