CONCERT HALL, 8-20 JANUARY 2013

Following critically acclaimed tours of London, Paris, Berlin and Bangkok, BLAZE comes to Sydney with a cast of 16 dancers ready to pop, lock and break dance their way around the city and onto the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall stage to entertain crowds of young dance and music fans looking for a night of summer entertainment.

Featuring music by Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, David Guetta, and Snoop Dogg this family friendly show takes the raw energy and athleticism of the dancers and combines it with high-end production values. The set, designed by Es Devlin, is inspired by the chaos of a teenage bedroom and provides a canvas for technically sophisticated video and light projections that use pioneering video mapping technology.

BLAZE unites a creative and performance team that combine experience of having worked with the world’s top performers including The Rolling Stones, Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé.  The Sydney season of Blaze will feature one Australian in the cast – the name of this high profile dancer will be announced soon.

BLAZE Director Anthony van Laast said, ‘Street dance is the true contemporary dance style of the 21st century – it never stands still and constantly evolves and reinvents itself. The dancers are the true stars of BLAZE and the quality of their performance is second to none. I feel lucky to have worked with one of the best creative teams in the industry to develop a production that showcases their talent so beautifully’.

Dancer and choreographer Van Laast is the acclaimed director of stage shows including Sister Act (2009), Mamma Mia! (2001), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (1993). He has also worked on film and TV projects including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
Sydney Opera House Head of Commercial Programming Andrew Spencer said, 'Sydney Opera House is thrilled to present this years’ summer headline show, Blaze. Following in the tradition of our other smash hit shows including Le Grand Cirque and The Illusionists,  Blaze will be great summer entertainment for kids and adults alike’.

Following on from the success of So You Think You Can Dance and America’s Got Talent, BLAZE has become an international phenomenon and since its critically acclaimed premiere on London’s West End, has played to sell out crowds in London, Paris, Berlin and Bangkok.

Following its Sydney season, BLAZE will travel to the Arts Centre Melbourne as part of their summer season.
