Sydney Opera House presents
CONCERT HALL, TUESDAY 30 APRIL
"The phenomenal Welsh baritone, occupies the same rarefied firmament as Domingo, Kissin, Ma and Fleming..."
In his only Australian recital, the world’s greatest Wagnerian bass-baritone Bryn Terfel will light up the Concert Hall stage with a selection of traditional songs from the Celtic isles and Schubert lieder in April 2013, accompanied by Sharolyn Kimmorley.
Bryn Terfel rose to prominence when he won the highly sought after Lieder Prize in the 1989 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. He has performed in all the great opera houses of the world, and is especially recognised for his portrayals of Figaro, Falstaff and Wotan.
Bryn is also known for his versatility as a concert performer, with highlights ranging from the opening ceremony of the Wales Millennium Centre to Last Night of the Proms and the Royal Variety Show. In 2007 he sang the title role in concert performances of Sweeney Todd as part of the re-opening of the Royal Festival Hall, London.
He is a Grammy, Classical Brit and Gramophone Award winner with a discography encompassing operas of Mozart, Wagner and Strauss, and more than ten solo discs including Lieder, American musical theatre, Welsh songs and sacred repertory. His latest album, Carols & Christmas Songs was released in December 2010.
In 2003, Bryn was made a CBE for services to Opera in the Queen’s New Year Honours list and in 2006 was awarded the Queen’s Medal for Music. He is also the last recipient of the Shakespeare Prize by the Alfred Toepfer Foundation, Hamburg.
Sharolyn Kimmorley is regarded as one of Australia’s finest vocal coaches and accompanists. She has recorded for the ABC, taken part in Chamber Music Concerts, and accompanied some of the world’s most distinguished recitalists including Dame Joan Sutherland, Håkan Hagegård, Neil Rosenshein, Joan Carden, Stephen Bennett, Michael Lewis, Wilhelmenia Fernandez, Sir Thomas Allen, Désirée Rancatore, Barbara Bonney, Teddy Tahu Rhodes and David Hobson.
