DAILY STAR
World music superstar composer and musician Goran Bregović returns to the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall with his 19 piece Weddings and Funerals Orchestra in March for what promises to be a breathtaking celebration of gypsy-styled Balkan epics and starkly beautiful choral suites.
Paving a musical legacy from the stage to the screen over three decades, the 62-year-old Bregović is revered internationally for performing musical magic that spellbinds audiences from a moshpit frenzy to pin-drop silence in the space of a song.
Backed by his boisterous orchestra of Gypsy brass players, percussionists, strings, and a Romanian choir, Bregović draws from a catalogue that includes songs from his punk rock days living in the Former Yugoslavia (in the band Bijelo Dugme) to his staggering compositions and over thirty filmscores (including Emir Kusturica's award-winning Time of the Gypsies, Johnny Depp classic Arizona Dream and 1995 epic Underground).
Transcending geographic and cultural boundaries, Bregović’s luminous career has seen him collaborate with the likes of Iggy Pop and Scott Walker to the late Cesária Evora. While his sound seems to channel centuries of tradition, he deftly weaves together the seemingly disparate strands of Balkan gypsy rock and tango, brassy “wedding and funeral” folk songs and European classicism into a rich, soul-nourishing experience of astounding magnitude that would be impossible to grasp were it not unfolding on stage. Bregović will also perform from the most recent of dozens of recordings, the festive Alkohol, and gypsy-dedicated follow up Champagne for Gypsies adding more layers to this musical palette, sweeping from boisterous pop tunes to sentimental vocal and string arrangements to quiet, contemplative compositions.
Whatever the piece, Bregović’s concerts transport the listener magically across the globe, with a drama and intensity that seems to reach deep into the collective heart of humanity.
The return of Goran Bregović to the Concert Hall guarantees an evening of career-defining moments, constant surprises and unexpected delight. A rare, musical experience not to be missed.
