NEW 7 WONDERS WORLD TOUR VISITS SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE
Zurich/Switzerland, November 21, 2006—Continuing its worldwide call to action, the New7Wonders World Tour visited Sydney Opera House (SOH) yesterday as the eleventh of the 21 finalist monuments in the campaign to choose the New 7 Wonders of the World. The striking abstract structure that juts out into Sydney Harbour is by far the newest of the finalists in the New7Wonders campaign, started in 1957 and dedicated in 1973. To celebrate SOH’s candidacy, hundreds of Sydneysiders and visitors attended a sausage sizzle and shared a huge SOH-shaped lamington while enjoying Aussie music.
On July 7, 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal, the winning monuments will be announced during the gala Official Declaration of the New 7 Wonders of the World, broadcast live across the planet. The event will highlight the rich cultures represented by the finalists.
The World Tour launched at the Acropolis on September 5 in a tribute to the ancient Greek origin of the Wonders of the World concept. Sydney Opera House is one of the world’s most recognized monuments and the building that architecturally put Australia on the world map. The official candidacy certificate was handed to the Hon. Morris Iemma, NSW Premier and Dr. Norman Gillespie, CEO of Sydney Opera House, by New7Wonders founder Bernard Weber.
Bernard Weber urges people in Australia to vote: “One of your greatest national symbols, Sydney Opera House, needs your support to have the chance at becoming one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. It is the only modern finalist and a testimony to Australia’s commitment to both the arts and groundbreaking architecture. Vote now on www.new7wonders.com or by phone and spread the word!”
The World Tour was in Europe for September and October and will remain in Asia and Oceania for 2006, proceeding to Africa, the Middle East and the Americas in 2007. For dates and the finalists list, visit www.new7wonders.com.
