EMIO GRECO | PC
DOUBLE POINTS: ONE & TWO
An experience both awesome and intimate.
The Guardian (UK)
Science, mathematics, philosophies of existence, theories of time and space, all these are component parts of Greco’s choreography. Heavyweight stuff by the sound of it. But on stage these concepts dance: and the steps don’t only look right – they look inspired and fresh.
The Herald (UK)
Italian choreographer Emio Greco and Dutch theatre director Pieter C. Scholten have worked together as Emio Greco l PC since 1995, searching for new dance forms and a new dance language. Emio Greco is widely acknowledged as one of the most electrifying figures in modern dance. From 21 November to 2 December when Emio Greco l PC brings its award-winning short pieces Double Points: One & Two to Sydney, audiences have a rare opportunity to see one of Europe’s most daring and innovative dance companies in the intimacy of the Playhouse.
In the Double Points series, Greco and Scholten question and pursue the notion of synchronicity. Every part of an Emio Greco l PC performance – stage design, lighting, sound and choreography – is integral to the work and there to support, contradict, provoke, compel and evolve with the body. Greco’s concept of choreography is that our memories and emotions, our circumstances and experiences, surface in a host of instinctive movements. How our innermost feelings manifest themselves through movement underpins everything that Emio Greco l PC creates.
In Double Points: One, Greco is confronted by the mesmerising sounds of Ravel’s Bolero. He takes this overused piece and finds something new and powerful in it. In turn resisting and responding to the compelling pattern imposed by the music, Greco moves between shadow and brilliant light exploring the boundaries of the dancing body in this epic solo.
For Double Points: Two,Greco is joined by a partner. Initially inhabiting opposite sides of the stage, the two dancers are drawn together to investigate the consequences of two people sharing the same space. The dancers move in unison to the loud rock music score, shadowing each other in perfect harmony.
The reaction of the press and audiences to the Double Points series has been positive, even euphoric, and has ensured that the work of Emio Greco l PC has been shown in theatres and festivals around the world. In 2001 the series won the Sonia Gaskell Prize for Choreography in Amsterdam and Double Points: One & Two won the Herald Angel at the Edinburgh Festival. Described by The Herald as “radiant, elemental and cosmic”, Double Points: One & Two is exceptional artistry and a dance experience not to be missed.
Emio Greco l PC travel to Australia with the support of the Netherlands Government and are presented as part of 1606-2006 Netherlands Australia – a program celebrating 400 years of Dutch-Australia relations.
