Bringing the best of urban street culture to The Studio, with an eclectic mix of popping, contemporary dance, hip hop, jazz, short film and spoken-word starring Robert Hylton, DJ Billy Biznizz and Australia’s own wordsmith Miles Merrill.
UK born Robert Hylton, schooled in the underground jazz dance scene, hip hop culture and body popping, has toured, taught and performed both nationally and internationally. Combining the excitement and energy of street dance and the eloquence of contemporary technique, Urban Classicism sees Hylton performing his solo dance work Verse, set to a searing live sound track from hip hop don, DJ Billy Biznizz.
Hylon’s talents stretch beyond live performance to film, having collaborated with director Oliver Ashton on three dance films and in 2001 winning the coveted Capture Award for dance on film.
Two of Hylton’s acclaimed short films will be screened as part of the line-up: Jaffaman, a futurist dance travelogue of one b-boy's journey to keep on dancin' through the mean streets of life; and Two Sugars with my Hip Hop Please,a collaboration with a group of pensioners from west London incorporating their ideas and personalities with Hylton’s own contemporary, hip hop technique.
PLUS performance poet Miles Merrill together with DJ Billy Biznizz opens the show with an entirely new set of rock-solid monologues and king-hit poems. No stranger to Triple J and FBI listeners, Miles Merrill combines elements of theatre, hip hop, slam poetry and music. For Urban Classicism he will present his new work Lamp Post Incantations.
