2007 Media Releases - Tim Minchin

Issued Tuesday, 1 May 2007

“Take out a second mortgage, sell the car, and put your money on the safest bet you’ll ever make in this uncertain world: that Tim Minchin will be the next big thing in musical comedy.” Time Out (UK)

“Simultaneously an excellent stand-up comedian, a purveyor of physical comedy, an accomplished musician and a lyricist of diabolical ingenuity. Witty, smart, and unabashedly offensive.” The Age

Following his sell-out season at The Studio in 2006, multi-award winning musician-comedian Tim Minchin returns with his hilariously black, brilliant, insightful, critically acclaimed new show So Rock, from 1 to 13 May.

So Rock debuted in 2006 to rave reviews and packed houses in Melbourne. It was nominated for a Barry Award for Most Outstanding Show and again became one of the most successful shows at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2006.

Tim Minchin's offbeat, mostly piano-based mix of songs, stand-up and poetry swings in subject matter from childhood obesity to plastic bags, censorship to arachnophobia, and has a distinct cabaret flavour.

Having performed around the world, Tim has just added the 2007 US Comedy Arts Festival Best Alternative Award to his 2005 Perrier Comedy Award for Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as well as his Festival Director's Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Setting himself apart from his peers with striking comedy through live music and song, Tim is wildly unorthodox, brilliantly incisive and vividly unique. His hilarious act not only offers quick-witted observations and rapid-fire delivery, but also the striking sound of an accomplished pianist… albeit a barefoot one.

Comedian, actor, composer, songwriter, pianist, musical director, wannabe rock n roll megastar and all round good egg, Tim has an impressive CV. As well as title roles in Perth Theatre Company’s Hamlet and Amadeus, his stage credits include The Australian Shakespeare Company’s Twelfth Night, the Black Swan Theatre Company’s Cosi and One Destiny, plus various other plays and short films.

Tim has also toured as a soloist throughout the UK, has performed his own West End season, recorded a one-hour special for Europe’s biggest radio station and performed at the Tickled Pink breast cancer fundraiser at the Royal Albert Hall. He has appeared on British television and radio and on Paramount Comedy’s ‘The World Stands Up’.
