SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE PRESENTS GRIFFIN THEATRE COMPANY’S PRODUCTION OF
HOLDING THE MAN
Adapted by Tommy Murphy from the book by Timothy Conigrave
Director David Berthold
“Superb...Murphy, Berthold and the cast's tribute to Caleo and Conigrave is compelling, wrenching and essential. I laughed, and I wept.” Sydney Morning Herald
Following two sold-out seasons, one of the most audacious and applauded Australian plays of modern times, Holding the Man, returns with an extended season in the Playhouse at Sydney Opera House from 9–26 May. Nominated for four Sydney Theatre Awards, including Best Mainstage Production and Best New Australian Work, the original 2006 premiere season sold out in a remarkable seven days.
In announcing the return season of Holding the Man, Rachel Healy, Director of Performing Arts, said, “Sydney Opera House is delighted that it is able to present this important work to a wider Sydney audience. It reaffirms our organisation's commitment to excellence in live performing arts and reinforces our mandate to present work that will resonate with the Sydney community. That we are able to meet these aims with a home-grown production from our colleagues at Griffin Theatre is particularly exciting and I hope that the legacy of this season will be a new audience for Griffin's work."
First presented at the SBW Stables Theatre by Griffin Theatre Company, Timothy Conigrave’s iconic memoir is a heart-wrenching account of a 15-year relationship that weathered disapproval, separation, temptation and, ultimately, death. Breathtakingly honest and achingly funny, it has been brilliantly adapted for the stage by NSW Premier‘s Literary Award winner, Tommy Murphy.
Nick Marchand, Artistic Director of Griffin Theatre Company, commented, “It’s all too rare to see a new Australian play enjoy a return season. To now transfer to the Playhouse shows you what an incredible impression Holding the Man is making on Sydney audiences. I am thrilled for Tommy, David and the cast – it’s a terrific night in the theatre and for us, the start of a great working relationship with Sydney Opera House.”
