Overview
Welcome to the new program of HEMISPHERES
We have a great program of concerts coming up this Spring and you don’t need to choose between them. Purchase a Hemispheres Multipack and you can save up to $40! Speak to the Box Office to find out how.
In September let yourself be swept away by the sensual sounds of bossa nova performed by five of the all-time greats of Brazilian bossa - Vinicius Cantuária, João Donato, Roberto Menescal, Wanda Sá and MarcosValle.
In October the maestro of Balkan Gypsy party sounds, Goran Bregovic and his 37-piece ensemble from the best of Old Europe will have you up and dancing.
In November India’s greatest percussionist Zakir Hussain will astound you with his must be seen to be believed dexterity.
These three amazing concerts follow on from a fantastic inaugural season which saw capacity houses, dancing in the isles, dancing on the stage and even the climbing of ladders from the stage to dance in the boxes!
This is a concert series which inspires, delights and often surprises. Come along and experience a world of music with us.
Read some of what the critics said
Yasmin Levy - 1 March
“What a woman. What a voice… Levy is a diva in the best sense of the word:
she is gorgeous and sensuous with a voice that leaves audiences shivering with delight.” THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
“What a wonderful sound she creates. Her highly developed technique of Arabic florid singing transplants itself beautifully into the ornamental, balladic feel of flamenco. Possessing a seamless purity of it’s own, her fusion seems to have found the point perfectly where these two musical cultures meet,… she is a remarkable artist” THE AUSTRALIAN
Cesaria Evora - 3 & 4 March
“Cesaria Evora instantly exudes such magnetism as to pull you forward in your seat… This is world music verite” SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
“The diminutive Cape Verdean singer had total control of the Opera House Concert Hall from the moment she entered the room… Indeed, the music ws so infectious and, by the end of the set, most of the audience were on their feet dancing and clapping along” DAILY TELEGRAPH
Emir Kusturica + The No Smoking Orchestra – 29 June
“With circus-like showmanship and a Balkan-folk-gone-rock’n’roll the eight-piece band turned the usually formal Concert Hall into a close approximation of a Belgrade drinking parlour…the concert was unforgettable”
