SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE PRESENT TOM TOM CLUB
“This is high-energy, high-impact entertainment and showcases hip-hop culture in all its youth glory.” **** The Advertiser
“combines feats of rhythmical creativity and acrobatic daring…there can’t be many more exciting spectacles than this.” **** The Herald (UK)
“so much more than a music show…these guys are artists and entertainers as much as athletes.” **** The Scotsman
The future of Australian circus and hip hop will explode into action when the Tom Tom Club returns home with its inimitable fusion of supercharged breaks, beats and flips. Delivering a high-impact collision of anarchic acrobatics, phenomenal beatboxing, master scratching and kick-ass drumming, this is circus at its most extreme.
Following an acclaimed season at the Edinburgh Fringe, percussionist Ben Walsh and the six member troupe will deliver a series of high octane shows at the Sydney Opera House. Joining Walsh is world champion beatboxer Tom Thum, scratch-master DJ Dizz1 and a cast of hardcore tumblers and aerialists whose disrespect for the laws of gravity is matched only by their sheer physical strength.
Graduates of Australia’s famous Flying Fruit Fly Circus, Daniel Catlow, Tom Flanagan, Ben Lewis and Shane Witt, slam up the stage as hard and as fast as the boys with the beats. From flying 6m into the air on a giant see-saw before dropping from the rafters holding only an aerial strap, this is hardcore tumbling, out-of-control acrobatics and severe aerial antics.
First performed at the Woodford Festival in December 2006, Tom Tom Club created a buzz amongst circus and hip hop artists, jettisoning itself on a head-long trajectory into immediate cult status. After performing at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the Club has just played 26 shows at the E4 Uderbelly in Edinburgh.
At the age of 30, musical director Ben Walsh (The Bird, Circle of Rhythm) is a veteran of festival performance having produced the highly acclaimed Human and the Audio Sphere, First Sound and Circuit Breaker. Walsh’s driving rhythms are the lifeblood of Tom Tom Club, with the walls of The Studio set to shake as the pulsating beats throb from his self-made drum kits mashed together from chemical drums, 80’s Asian gadgets and more than 2000 cable ties.
Very few beatboxers can come close to the amazing sounds created by whiz kid Tom Thum. At just 18 years of age, Thum was crowned the World Duo Champion at the 2005 World Beat Boxing Championships in Germany and recently secured second place at Scribblejam, America’s most prestigious hip-hop competition.
With no set format, it is up to the whims of the cast and the crowd to determine how each performance will pan out. Loud, fun and engaging, Tom Tom Club is more energy than Red Bull and more havoc than a train crash.
