SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE SUPPORTS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEOPLE WITH A DISABILITY
To celebrate International Day of People with a Disability on Wednesday, November 21, Sydney Opera House has a number of different activities planned.
Sydney Opera House will also host the second annual AART.BOXX exhibition in the Utzon Room on November 21 and 22. Initiated by Accessible Arts, this is the only exhibition which fosters and showcases the talents of young Australian artists under the age of 25 who have a disability.
AART.BOXX aims to extend and challenge the current discourses within contemporary art by including art practices informed by cultures of disability. The exhibition features provocative works by more than 30 emerging artists and includes mediums such as painting, sculpture, animation and digital media.
The common thread that links these artists together is their innate need to communicate through visual arts. The subjects explored in the exhibition vary from Jarrod Wendt’s ceramic platters that juxtapose domestic wares with images of military fighter jets in mid-conflict to digital self portraits by Bianca Wight which express her personal journey with mental illness.
Sydney Opera House is also offering a special discount on The Access Tour. Specially organised for people with mobility limitations, the tour brings to life the amazing stories behind this miracle of architecture and engineering.
The discount is only available on tours from Wednesday, November 28 to Tuesday, December 4, 2007. The one-hour tour begins at 12midday and costs $15 (normal price $27.50).
Sydney Opera House is working on improving access and amenities for its patrons with the $38million Accessibility and Western Foyers Project. A major part of this building works is a large glass lift between the lower concourse, the western foyers and the box office foyer.
To further assist less mobile visitors, families with prams and people with a disability, two new escalators will be installed from the Box Office foyer to the Concert Hall and Opera Theatre south foyers.
The new lift and escalators will save guests negotiating 92 steps with work expected to be completed by mid 2009.
Booking and registration for The Access Tour is essential on 9250 7250 or by email to email@example.com. For more information on Aart.Boxx or to RSVP contact Josie Cavallaro on 9251 6499 (Extension 4) or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
