8 -13 June Drama Theatre
‘Knee-tremblingly sexy, beautiful and moving’ The Guardian
Australia’s most innovative circus company, Circa, will perform their self-titled 2009 Edinburgh Fringe hit show for six performances only from 8 – 13 June, Drama Theatre.
Remixing three of the company’s most acclaimed works, Circa, jaw-droppingly mixes circus and contemporary dance to create hauntingly beautiful scenes of poetic beauty.
The extreme physical feats of the seven performers combined with human emotion, immersive sound, light and projection, in a new kind of circus which is at once, spectacular, sensual, dazzling, adventurous and dangerous.
Wherever Circa has taken its breathtaking, heart-stopping shows, audiences have flocked to see the impossible happen. The performers move from highly connected acrobatic and tumbling sequences to fast-paced moments of great intricacy where precision and timing are everything.
The sound and score, featuring artists such as Leonard Cohen, Sigur Ros, The Balanescu Quartet, Asphex Twin and Jacques Brel, are rigorously integrated into the show creating a dramatic whole.
“...in its sheer force of daring and corporeal ingenuity... it might become one of the Wonders of the World.” The Arts Desk, UK
Circa has established itself as a centre of excellence in contemporary circus, under the artistic direction of Yaron Lifschitz. Based in Brisbane, the members are drawn from performing institutions across Australia such as the National Institute of Circus Arts and the Flying Fruit Fly Circus.
Lifschitz said, “I think circus is cluttered with lycra and smoke machines. We wanted to see what it was like when you stripped all of that back. These bodies are doing extraordinary things. It’s a very refined performance which taps into the fragile, fraught nature of being human. It is the only place I can think of where real circus skills talk emotionally to an audience. Plus, it’s a little bit sexy and kinky, which we all are.”
Performing in 18 countries since 2006, the company has been rapturously welcomed by audiences and critics alike and is now recognised as one of the most dynamic forces in its field. Their highly innovative, genre-bending works stretch the practice of circus and celebrate the expressive possibilities of the human body at its extremes.
Part of Sydney Opera House’s Adventure Series, Circa, is performed by: Darcy Grant, Freyja Edney, Scott Grove, Chelsea McGuffin Jesse Scott, Emma Serjeant and Lewis West.
