MEDIA ALERT: 21 December, 2012
New Year's Eve Access to Sydney Opera House
With Sydney Opera House a prominent and popular vantage point for revellers on New Year’s Eve, members of the public are reminded that access to Bennelong Point will be closed when the site reaches maximum capacity.
Due to major works on the Opera House Forecourt, onsite capacity is less than previous years. The Opera House anticipates the site will fill quickly and so urges visitors to arrive in time to secure their spot and avoid disappointment. The site will be closed as soon as it reaches capacity and will not reopen. There is NO pass out system.
Macquarie Street will be closed to traffic from 10am and the general public will be diverted to East Circular Quay. Access to Sydney Opera House will be through security bag check points at the southern end of the site. No alcohol or glass can be brought onto Bennelong Point. Food and drinks (including alcohol) can be purchased from onsite outlets.
A number of ticketed events are being held inside and outside Sydney Opera House but areas of the site have been reserved for members of the public with great vantage points of the harbour, bridge and fireworks.
Holders of tickets to events should enter the site from Macquarie Street only.
Media access to Sydney Opera House on New Year’s Eve may be arranged by advance notice. Note that media access is for public areas only and not the ticketed events.
All media requests should be made no later than midday on Friday, December 28, in order to secure a wristband from Sydney Opera House to gain access.
Media are advised that there is NO PARKING available at Sydney Opera House on New Year’s Eve. Wilsons Sydney Opera House Car Park will also be closed.
Macquarie Street will be closed from Bridge Street. There will be no vehicle access to Sydney Opera House past Bridge Street.
The use of public transport is strongly encouraged. Additional public transport services will be in operation but some delays may be expected. For full public transport information including timetables, trip planning and travel tips visit www.131500.com.au or call 131 500.
