OVERVIEW

"After the last sounds of the orchestra drifted away, the silence in the hall... seemed to last for half a minute. The ovation went on and on." THE NEW YORK TIMES

Sydney Opera House will be host to the first ever Australian tour by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Sir Simon Rattle.

Without a doubt one of the greatest orchestras in the world, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra has been led by legendary conductors: Hans von Bülow, Wilhelm Furtwangler, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado and, since 2002, Sir Simon Rattle.  Humanity is at the heart of the Orchestra’s ethos.  In the words of Maestro Sir Simon Rattle, “Music is no mere luxury, but instead a fundamental need. Music must be a vital and essential element in the life of each individual.”

This historic occasion over four unforgettable concerts by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra will be covered by two programs and be a truly, unforgettable experience.

SIR SIMON RATTLE

Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

"Rattle threatened to take the lid off the Albert Hall…music to inhale, to swoon to, to exult in"
THE INDEPENDENT (UK)

Sir Simon Rattle’s career trajectory has taken him from being one of the most dynamic and exciting conductors around to also being one of the most revered and respected, with his appointment as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Rattle burst onto the world stage, aged 25, with his transformation of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra into a powerhouse ensemble, noted for its commitment to new music and for Rattle’s refreshing approach to canonical repertoire and unique programming, ranging from Baroque music to jazz. Since then, Sir Simon has had long term relationships with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. His recording, including the complete symphonies of Mahler, have won accolades and fans the world over. In 1994 Simon Rattle was knighted by the Queen of England and has since received numerous distinctions.

Before being appointed (by a vote by the Orchestra) to his prestigious position, Sir Simon Rattle had been working with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for 15 years. The closer engagement between Rattle and the Orchestra has led to music-making of the highest order and a commitment to education and outreach. As audiences and critics have noted, with Sir Simon Rattle at the helm, it seems that the famed Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra can do anything.
