Festival of Dangerous Ideas

Venue: Various Venues
Presented by: Sydney Opera House

The Festival of Dangerous Ideas is a ‘must-see’ annual event for many, and a ‘must-do’ for some of the most controversial and confronting speakers in the world today.

Description

Entering its 6th year in 2014, The Festival of Dangerous Ideas (FODI) is part of the year-round Ideas at the House program of the Sydney Opera House. It presents ideas, conversation and debate from leading thinkers and culture creators in a series of talks across one dangerous weekend.

FODI 2013 was bursting with debate, indignation and controversy with major international guests discussing everything from religion, the trappings of modern society to flogging. The weekend concluded with an animated ABC Q&A panel that even Tony Jones couldn’t handle!

You can watch (or re-live) all FODI talks here on the Ideas at the House YouTube Channel.

FODI 2013 highlights
Savage Love sex columnist Dan Savage, author of American Savage, a journalist and prominent gay rights activist who advised FODI goers that their relationships would be all the more long-lasting if the were more open to the idea of cheating.

Journalist, author and television writer/producer of multiple award winning HBO stalwart The Wire, David Simon addressed the division of equality and justice within the most powerful and arguably broken country in the world, America.

Erwin James, convicted murderer and Guardian journalist spoke about life on the other side of the prison wall, bringing rare insights into the flaws of our contemporary penal system.
