Sydney Opera House acquired a suite of Jørn Utzon-designed furniture at auction in May, 2006 for $12,000.
Jørn Utzon designed the furniture for Sydney Opera House when living here in the 1960s. The prototypes were made of wood, used in the family home and later shipped back to Denmark when the family left Sydney.
The furniture was only manufactured commercially for a short period in the mid 1960s by Fritz Hanzen, a Danish design company. Constructed with aluminium legs and frame and wooden base support, the coverings are in the original thick brown wool. The suite is considered to be in excellent condition for its age and is the only Utzon designed furniture owned by Sydney Opera House.
