Over the weekend of 5 – 6 April Sydney Opera House will host Homeground, a free celebration of First Nations music, dance and culture, against the spectacular backdrop of Sydney Harbour.

Sunday’s lineup includes emerging singer-songwriter Thaylia, dancers from Wagana and NAISDA, electro-soul duo Bow and Arrow, the hauntingly beautiful voice of Ursula Yovich, modern dance fusions from Move it Mob Style (as seen on NITV), Thomas E. S. Kelly and dancers, iconic Australian musicians Shane Howard and Shellie Morris, Australian Indigenous hip-hop pioneers Street Warriors, ARIA and Deadly Award-winner Casey Donovan, musician and playwright Troy Brady, Black Arm Band’s Emma Donovan and an exciting new talent from Arnhem Land, Yirrmal.

The Blue Mountains Darug country based company uses dance to combine Wiradjuri, Gamilaroi & Gundungurra representation.  Jo Clancy’s captivating choreography has seen the international-touring Wagana Aboriginal Dance be selected to perform at the Commonwealth Youth Dance Festival in Scotland later this year.

2pm, Bar Badu

With Bundjalung and South Sea Islander roots, Marcus Corowa combines elements of blues, jazz and funk to create a soulful, soothing sound that is distinctly his own. This gifted composer and songwriter was awarded the 2012 Deadly Award for Most Promising New Talent in Music.

2.30pm, Bar Badu

Emerging singer-songwriter Thaylia is a voice of courage, inspiration and hope.  The West Australian ABMusic graduate sang with Archie Roach’s band on their 2013 Into the Bloodstream tour and recently released her debut single ‘Hope’. She has also appeared in NITV‘s Noongar Djando, Chocolate Martini and Discovering Notes.

3pm, Bar Badu

The dynamic couple met at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music 15 years ago. Since then they have toured nationally, supported INXS and Eskimo Joe and received Triple J Unearthed airplay. Bow (Mindy) and Arrow’s (Mitchell) signature electro-soul can be heard on their 2013 EP, Don’t play Roulette in Russia

Founded over 30 years ago the Gosford based college is devoted to the development of contemporary Indigenous dance. This performance of the Bungal (dance) will feature a series of dances by thirty-five developing artists and renowned cultural tutors who will also conduct workshops.

With a deeply soulful and hauntingly beautiful voice, Ursula has performed as a soloist in prestigious venues in London and New York; a long way from Maningrida, the remote Northern Territory Aboriginal community she grew up in. She starred in the television series Redfern Now and in the award-winning production The Secret River and has just completed a North American & Canadian tour performing to sold-out houses with the critically acclaimed Barefoot Divas.

Whatever your age you can feel the sand between your toes and get your body rocking to the latest beats. With dancers from the Bundjalung, Gomileroi and the Torres Strait Islands combining traditional dance with contemporary moves, this promises to be a seriously fun and unforgettable experience.

One of Australia's finest singer-songwriters, Shellie has performed world-wide from Vancouver Winter Olympics, Japan and London to remote areas of Australia. She has sung with the Black Arm Band, collaborated with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and last year released the award-winning album, Ngambula Wiji li-Wunungu with the Borroloola Songwomen.

Wiradjuri and Bundjalung man Thomas Kelly is a NAISDA Dance College graduate. As well as performing for Okareka Dance Company, Kelly recently danced and conducted workshops in Dubai as part of traditional group ‘One Fire’. His numerous choreography projects include Vicki Van Hout’s latest work ‘Long Grass’.

7.35pm, Bar Badu

Three dynamic artists take the stage with their latest musical work for a genre-defying spectacle. This special collaboration featuring the ARIA and Deadly Award winning Casey Donovan with pioneers of Australian Indigenous hip-hop, Street Warriors is part of the Sydney Opera House Songrites Project.

Thirty-one years since his hit song Solid Rock, Shane Howard takes the stage with Black Arm Band’s Emma Donovan, Amy Saunders (Tiddas) and the latest Aboriginal talent, Yirrmal, from the Yothu Yindi family in the Top End of Australia.
