‘Sound and image powerfully entwined.’ Boston Globe
‘Live soundtrack for youth, beauty and mystery frozen in time.’ New York Times
The Screen Tests:
Between 1964 and 1966, Andy Warhol shot hundreds of ‘screen tests’ – beautiful, revealing portraits of the famous and the not so famous, all visitors to his studio, the Factory.
Lou Reed, Nico, Dennis Hopper, Edie Sedgwick, were all among the subjects, shot in black and white, in four-minute, uninterrupted takes. The result is a collection of silent masterpieces that intrigue, unsettle and captivate.
‘Filmed by a stationary 16-millimeter camera, these portraits, with their stark light and shadow, are, in a word, mesmerizing.’ New York Times
The Concert:
In a live art/music experience, New York Indie darlings Dean & Britta (formerly of Luna) perform onstage as thirteen of Warhol’s ‘most beautiful’ films are projected overhead.
Featuring original compositions from Dean & Britta with an obscure Velvet Underground cover and Bob Dylan’s ‘I’ll Keep It with Mine’, the soundtrack ranges from dreamy, swirling pop to ominous instrumentals.
‘I often think of Warhol when I go to see Luna play… because Warhol is the ground zero for the New York rock & roll that Luna have taken up.’ Joe Levy, New York Music Critic
Dean & Britta’s wistful, 60s flavoured songs provide the perfect lyrical and musical complement to each of the subjects. They illuminate and give life to these iconic portraits, creating the perfect live soundtrack for Warhol’s technically simple yet brilliantly transfixing films.
‘It's hard to overstate Andy Warhol's influence on art and pop culture, both as an innovator and a mercurial, compelling public personality… These short films are like windows into an amazingly creative and glamorous yet, ultimately, doomed era.’ The Tribune, Pittsburgh
13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests is a project jointly commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum and Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts 2008.
