Description
Scandinavia’s bracing beauties inspired Grieg and Grainger to compose their most memorable works. Grieg’s famous piano concerto combines the simple candour of folksong with brilliant display, making it a model for virtuoso concertos ever since. Australia’s Percy Grainger was one of its champions, as he was of Nordic folk music. His captivating suite of Danish folk tunes includes some of his most passionate and joyous music, taking full advantage of an enormous orchestra.
Honegger’s third symphony evokes ‘a spirit in search of serenity amid all the unrest which is our present state’. It is a glowing affirmation of the triumph of humanity in the face of adversity. Eivind Gullberg Jensen, one of the most exciting young conductors around, has led Europe’s most prestigious orchestras. He makes his Sydney Symphony debut with dynamic pianist Gabriela Montero.
