Description

‘Be happy, my homeland, which I love above all, my beautiful, my great, my only homeland!
Your soil is sacred to me.’
Smetana.

Smetana wrote a love letter to Bohemia and its legends in his epic symphonic poem, Má Vlast (My Fatherland). In three movements we’ll travel from the mighty fortress, Vyšehrad, through woods and meadows along the River Moldau and finally to a ferocious battle where the warrior-maiden Šárka leads her tribe to victory.
Peter Sculthorpe, one of our most influential composers, has created a distinctively Australian sound inspired by the people, animals and landscape of the country as well as by Asian and indigenous music. Mangrove is a brooding picture of the tropical coast, Sculthorpe’s response
to Australia’s strange environment.
Exiled from his native Austria, Korngold composed much of the music he’s famous for in Hollywood. Echoes of his opulent film scores can be heard in his Violin Concerto, a luscious showcase for Arabella Steinbacher.
