Description
On his wedding day Elgar was presented with Cardinal Newman’s visionary religious poem The Dream of Gerontius. The gift bore fruit – from it Elgar composed his greatest choral work, a passionate outpouring of his personal convictions, which became a universal spiritual touchstone.
‘I went to sleep, and now I am refreshed…' The soul of Gerontius suffers the agony and ecstasy of death, passing, with the help of his guardian angel, to the seat of God’s judgement. This creative masterwork from a composer who understood the orchestra and the human voice so completely is a remarkable journey for artists and audiences alike. Maestro Ashkenazy has assembled
an international cast of singers to bring this work to the Sydney Opera House, for a concert to inspire the spirit.
