Description
Viennese Classics - Three gems by the masters of Vienna: Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert.
Though popular in his day, Mozart’s Oboe Concerto was lost for many years and resurfaced only in 1920. Lucky for us, as it’s one of Mozart’s sunniest creations, bubbling over with wit and light-footed grace. Taking centre stage, the oboe is operatic diva in a dazzling showcase, perfectly suited to our brilliant Principal Oboe, Diana Doherty. Beethoven takes up where Mozart and Haydn left off and though his first symphony is built along Classical lines, it has some typically anarchic twists, for example, an opening that wanders from key to key before settling on bright C major.
Not one of Schubert’s symphonies was performed in public in his lifetime. When the Sixth was eventually premiered in 1828 it was for the composer’s memorial concert, and Vienna was both amazed at the music’s brilliance and keenly aware of the unassuming genius it mourned.
