Soloists from the Czech Philharmonic – Afflatus Quintet
Sydney Opera House is thrilled to welcome Afflatus, the wind quintet of the Czech Philharmonic who bring us music from their homeland from across the centuries.
The ensemble amazes its audiences with musical energy and unity. Slovo, Prague
The Czech Philharmonic is an historic ensemble. It gave its first performance in 1894 at the Prague National Theatre under the baton of none other than Antonin Dvořák. In 1908 they gave the world premiere of Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 with the composer conducting. This year its celebrated wind soloists make a special trip to Sydney for the Utzon Music Series.
Their program is inspired by their heritage. First they play the overture to The Marriage of Figaro, (which took Prague by storm in the 1780s), then the effervescent music of Anton Reicha who was a great friend of Beethoven, and is known as the father of the wind quintet. A Czechoslovakian ensemble could not visit without playing Dvořák, but Afflatus bring us something a little different, with a wind arrangement of Dvořák’s American string quartet. Finally, discover the eloquent and individual voice of Leos Janáček’s most famous student, Pavel Haas.
‘Afflatus’ means inspiration, a stroke of genius, a breath from the gods. Breathe deep, because this is the only performance in Sydney from these master musicians.
