From Mahler, it’s a tempestuous but ultimately uplifting journey from the heavy tread of a funeral march to a declaration of love (the famous Adagietto!) and on to an ecstatic finale. In Ashkenazy’s hands, Mahler’s Fifth Symphony is vivid and fiery, full of “flair and bravado”. You’ll want to hear this.
