Vladimir Ashkenazy has too many musical favourites to count! But for this concert he’s agreed to name three, beginning with Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet.

Description

Indulge in a few of Ashkenazy’s favourites as you experience the romanticism of Tchaikovsky mixed with the neoclassical Mozartian concerto of Strauss and leaving on high spirits with Walton’s Symphony No.1. Follow the journey which includes guest soloist Hansjörg Schellenberger, former Berlin Philharmonic oboist.

After Tchaikovsky’s Romantic masterpiece – music to tug at your heartstrings – there’s Richard Strauss in neoclassical mode with his breezily Mozartian Oboe Concerto. Our soloist is former Berlin Philharmonic oboist, Hansjörg Schellenberger.

And then there’s William Walton’s English mix of humour, high spirits and nostalgia. “Walton 1 is an absolute favourite of mine,” says Ashkenazy. “It’s compelling and it has tremendous energy.” This is music that’s carried along by the brazen power of its rhythms and vibrant orchestral sounds – a breathtaking end to a dramatic concert.
