The 2013 AWO season will be in the form of three exciting concerts, for one night only in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House on Thursday October 3rd and two concerts in the Hamer Hall of the Melbourne Arts Centre on Wednesday October 2nd and Friday October 4th

All three concerts of this remarkable orchestra will be conducted by internationally acclaimed Maestro Zubin Mehta and will include Stravinsky’s ‘The Rite of Spring’ and Mahler’s ‘1st Symphony (“Titan”)’. Maestro Mehta has conducted the cream of the world’s celebrated orchestras including the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics as well as conducting the historic Three Tenors in their inaugural performance in Rome. In 1981, Zubin Mehta was appointed Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic for life in recognition of his dedication to the Orchestra.

2013 is the 100th anniversary of the first performance of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring". When it was first performed in Paris it caused a riot as it's rhythms and tonality were considered to be far too progressive. Today however, the work is one of the boldest, most virtuosic and exciting works ever written for orchestras. With it's relentless power and rhythmic energy, it constantly brings the house down.

Mahler's 1st Symphony is perhaps his most popular and with good reason. It has everything anyone could wish for in a large symphony-passion, extreme emotion, fury, tragedy, excitement, pathos, the famous "Frere Jaques" slow movement and one of the grandest endings to any work ever written.

The AWO concerts will be an event not to be missed – described by Australia’s Film and Music luminary Baz Luhrmann as “one of the most exhilarating projects in our recent history of classical music!
