The boy wizard brings magic to the piano. The Observer
Benjamin Grosvenor. Remember that name. A prodigiously talented young pianist, Grosvenor has just made history as the youngest soloist ever to open the BBC Proms Concert Series. His performance of the fiendish Liszt Piano Concerto was brilliant – ‘liquid gold’ in the words of The Independent critic Jessica Duchen.
Grosvenor came to the attention of the world when he won the Keyboard Final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2004, aged just eleven. But despite his tender years, he is no child prodigy. Indeed, musicians, critics and audiences alike agree that his startling musical intuition, combined with a ferocious technique, have produced a musician who can bring real insights and a profound sense of poetry to the most challenging of repertoire.
He has already performed concertos with the London, Tokyo and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras, to name but a few. Now, armed with an exclusive recording deal with Decca Classics and invitations from all over the world, he is coming to Sydney Opera House to make his Australian debut in a program featuring works from the heartland of the virtuoso pianist, by Chopin, Liszt and Ravel.
Amazingly, this thoughtful and self-effacing musician, who plays Chopin with airy grace and Ravel with blissful clarity, reckons he’s “not that talented”.
You may disagree.
