Dmitri Shostakovich’s true testament is his 15 string quartets. These intensely personal, profound, bitterly funny and tragic utterances are collectively one of the great works of 20th century art.

There are few composers as compelling and controversial as Shostakovich, whose music is a life-and-death battle of ideas about truth, ideology and existence. Composed throughout his life, the quartets comprise a private journal, from energetic youth to the terrified contemplation of mortality.
