Description

The larrakitj is a memorial pole, traditionally made from trees hollowed out by termites, and used in north-east Arnhem Land to house the bones of a deceased person. Each larrakitj pole was made unique through the sacred designs painted with ochre and carved into each pole. These intricate motifs on each larrakitj reflected the knowledge, country, songs and dreaming of both the clan and the deceased individual. Today the larrakitj have become sculptural pieces.

This very special workshop for students is up close and personal with living culture. Facilitated by knowledge keepers and artists from north-east Arnhem Land, participating students will learn of stories and their marks, and how to represent them with ochre.
