The Voyage
House:Ed 2010
Recommended for School Years K - 6
‘The Voyage is an uplifting affirmation and celebration of the wonderment of life.’ Lowdown, Australia
The Voyage depicts the joyous life of the Okinawan people, using the movements of this region’s classical dance. Seven dancers and three musicians transform, scene by scene, into traditional characters, from fishermen to farmers to royalty.
Beautiful costumes and choreography combine with the traditional sounds of the Sanshin (an Okinawan stringed instrument), Chinese violin, flute and drum, in an interactive mosaic of song and dance. The Voyage shows the Okinawan way of living, their unique cultural beliefs, as well as their willingness to understand and appreciate other distinctive ways of life. The dance, Michi-nu-Sura, celebrates the happiness of living the same day, in the same moment together.
The Voyage premiered at the Festival d’Avignon in France in 2006 and has also toured to the 2007 Danish Children’s Theatre Festival in Viborg, and the inaugural Asian Children’s Theatre Festival in Seoul.
