After beguiling audiences with her performance with the Sydney Symphony last year , California-based harp virtuoso Joanna Newsom makes a much anticipated return to Sydney Opera House for one Sydney show only on January 18.
Having recently been working on new material, fans of her stripped back, live sound will be thrilled to hear a vast selection of her sweeping song suites, with band including Ryan Francesconi (tambura, guitar) and Neal Morgan (drums, vocals), plus brass and string accompaniment.
"This extraordinary harpist has a glorious, untamed voice and a sheaf of tricky song-poems…conjuring one startlingly vivid image after another." - The New York Times
"She’s less a songwriter than a craftsman of musical trinkets, each one a miniature marvel of detail and originality." - The Japan Times
"Avant-garde American music for the back porch." – Pitchfork
Newsom effortlessly blends the genres of folk and pop, weaving gothic tales with her ethereal, melodic harp. Her second album, Ys (pronounced ‘ees’) is hailed as a stunning achievement worldwide. Epic in scope, it’s even more musically rich and lyrically complex than her debut The Milk-Eyed Mender. Newsom proved with Ys that she is a conceptual musical talent, happiest in uncharted territory.
The album was recently voted by Mojo Magazine and Pitchfork as one of the albums of the past decade.
Don’t miss Joanna Newsom’s only Sydney performance!
